Lauchlan McKinnon
Happy Friday everybody!
Today we talked to Lauchlan McKinnon about the frist show he played back in October of 2012!
“I started my first band when I was around 14, or 15, and we played some random little talent shows and parties and what not, but I'd count my first real show as the time we played the intermission for the band “ages'' during Fright Night at Two Rivers Wildlife Park. Ages played 4 different 45 minute sets i think, and we would go up and do 3 or 4 songs in between each of their sets. I think my favorite memory was sharing the stage with my best friend Drew and my brother Liam, and cutting my teeth as a musician for the first time. What I always find funny about that is that someone on staff had expected that there were over 2000 people there that night, and even though they were there for the festivities, and not to see us, I still think that it's the biggest crowd i've ever played in front of. Even recently, i opened up for Matt Mingelwood with over 1000 tickets sold, and i was sitting there thinking ‘this isnt as big a crowd as my first show’”
Lauchlan has played in many different bands over the years, The High Tide, Vulpine, Low Rentals, and many more. Lauchlan is both a great drummer and a great performer. He never fails at making sure people are having the time of their lives.
“That first show made me want to do this for the rest of my life. I loved every minute of it, and wanted to have those feelings again every chance I got. The nervous butterflies in the pit of your stomach before you hit the stage instantly turn into confidence when you nail a drum fill you might have been worried about, and any mistakes on the stage are quickly eclipsed by the pure joy of playing music with your best friends. I feel like my experience with my first show was a perfect taste of what was to come. Things went wrong, things went right, we didn't get paid but we got the “experience”, and at the end of the day i got to do what i love most.
Lauchlan is both a very talented musician and also incredibly kind and selfless, it was a pleasure talking to him. And if this won you over, you can see him play tonight with Low Rentals at St. Patricks church. We can't wait to see much more of Lauchlan in the future
